Enter , closing this Sunday, and you’ll hear chimes pinging through the galleries from extravagant clocks that French aristocrats used to mark time more than two centuries ago.

Length: 5:24

The ornate instruments on walls and mantels in the galleries are the very same clocks that woke elite Parisians from their silk beds in the mid-18th century. They sounded as the well-heeled , planned travel across the seas, and in lavish salons.

The clocks reflect the exhibition’s theme of the “Four Times of Day,” which chronicles the activities of an ultrarich household from morning to night. Several of the timekeeping and travel-themed objects on display—six clocks and two globes—helped dukes and duchesses navigate their world and arrive on time to their soirees.

One of the most resplendent clocks is the ornamented with a monkey playing in a tree, yellow flowers, and a green dragon.

“It’s pure delight, whimsy in its ultimate form,” curator Charissa Bremer-David told me. This clock was useful if you wanted to, say, venture out of your bedchambers in the middle of the night for a cup of chocolat. Its mechanism, which sounded with quarter chimes every 15 minutes, had a little string that repeated the last chime when pulled. “So one didn’t have to go to the bother of striking a flint and lighting a candle to see the time,” Charissa explained. “One could hear the time.”

The chiming, paired with ticking, were also reminders of mortality. The French clockmakers who constructed this splendid gilt-bronze playfully addressed that heady topic by letting Love conquer Time. It features two cherubs absconding with an hourglass and disarming Father Time.

Length: 2:17

The standing tall in an adjacent gallery would have made Father Time proud. This formidable nine-foot timepiece, whose mechanism was created by a scientific amateur, depicts the sphere of the earth flattened on a plane. (It was a guaranteed crowd-pleaser at dinner parties).

What did it do? The measured a 24-hour day and the months of the year, and depicted zodiac signs and constellations. Standing in your salon in Paris, you could know the time in Japon, La Californie, renato watches, Perse, Londres, or Siam, to name a few.

Another dial , used to help calculate longitude on Earth. The planisphere tracked lunar phases, which helped maritime traders in northern France know the tidal calendar for port cities around the world. On the top of the towering timepiece sits an armillary model of a solar system with the sun at the center. (You won’t hear the planisphere’s chimes, sadly, as its movement is now missing).

All this data was quite useful for the clock’s first owner, , the king’s minister of secret diplomacy. This orchestrator of clandestine operations needed to know when his messengers were arriving by ship in the ports of France, and when vessels were embarking for negotiations or wars.

Having a planisphere in your parlor was rare, but prosperous French men of the world would surely have a set of globes in their homes. During the age of exploration, were not just for display, tudor watches, but essential business tools in home offices—think an 18th-century GPS. The outline of the Pacific Northwest in this globe from 1728 is vague, as mapmakers’ knowledge of the region was a bit cloudy.

Its pair, a , was made by a scientist who taught physics to royal children. It maps the heavens and the signs of the zodiac.

Astrology was believed to predict personality in the early 18th century, but that superstition waned with the advent of the Age of Reason. A , a wealthy French magistrate (or judge), is the perfect picture of the rational man. This son of a financier poses in his study with the accoutrements of the intellectual: books, quill pens, and a globe (which you can ). I wonder how many chimes of the clock Rieux heard before the artist was finished and the gentleman could remove his wig and velvet robes and retire for the day.

After Sunday’s close—and a trip to Texas, where the exhibition will be presented at the MFA Houston as —the globes and clocks will return to their permanent quarters in the South Pavilion, but the timepieces will fall quiet once again: being in perpetual service would damage their delicate mechanisms.

As a 21st-century souvenir of the exhibition’s 18th-century glamour, download this ringtone for your phone. It won’t make accepting calls any more fun, but it might turn heads—the ultimate goal of these luxurious accoutrements.

This may be a small thing, but someone pointed out to me they really liked the small analog clock in the center of the dash of a particular car.

Someone else said they hated it, and thought it was stupid to put analog clocks in cars in 2013.

I said that, for whatever reason, an old-fashioned dial clock is often added to an interior to make the car seem more "upscale" or luxurious.

Is this true? Does a clock with hands on it make any difference to you? Or would you just prefer a digital clock?

They certainly look classier than digital clocks to me

They look classier for the same reason that Breitling, Patek Phillipe and Tag Heuer aren't known for their digital watches.

Some might also say, why do we have wood trim interior in 2013, since they invented this new age material called plastic, but again, it's considered a classy touch that harkens back to a different time in auto design.

Also, if you really just want to see the time displayed digitally, it's probably on the nav screen, in the gauge cluster or both.

A luxury feature? No, but some manufacturers do try to market it as such. I agree with SH & QRK that its just meant as a touch of class.

On the internet you can be anything you want.
Its strange that so many people choose to be stupid.

When I think luxury an analog clock doesn't come to mind. I think they can make an interior seem a bit more...special but I wouldn't call them a luxury feature.

It keeps the brand relevant. You can flip it for leather that you see in the top-models of you common car. Because there is leather, is it a luxury car? Having that analog clock, DOES make you feel like you have something special. I think you will see more sales in luxury segment brands, if the manufacturers stop putting leather and the like in the common car segment. It's pretty muddled right now, as we all know.

Good point.

To me, digital clocks remind me of when they first appeared . . . the 70's & 80's. So they may be more modern but to me they look more retro.

Definitely a retro touch, but I'd even say it draws from the 30's and 40's. Duesenbergs, Bugattis, etc.

You can make a analog clock out of some high end material, wheres the digital is still a screen. So Yes.

It gives it an old-fashioned look. What if Big Ben were suddenly turned digital? Wouldn't look right, that's for sure, so what if they stuck an analog clock in a Scion? In my opinion, it just adds a nice touch to upscale interiors, like a jewel on a ring.

As of now yes there's something about one that just says luxury to me. It takes more to make a classy analog and incorporate it then it does a digital. It also must cost more to go with a nice analog vs digital.

Now if all of a sudden ever car started offering them then yea it would take that something special touch they have, betsey johnson watch.

I dig a really nice analog clock in a luxury automobile. It's a great example of attention to detail, and a throwback to old-world luxury, imo.

IIRC, Chrysler got a lot of attention in ~1999 by reintroducing analog clocks in the 300M.

It had a nice backlight (Indiglo, I think), art deco design and did add a classy touch to the dash as a change from all the digital clocks at the time. Full disclosure - I had a 2000 300M.

This. Almost anything you do to a digital clock will still result in it looking like nothing more than numbers on a screen. An analog clock can be dressed up to look much classier. TypeSH nailed it, designer watches are analog for a reason.

You can have an opinion, just be prepared to be relentlessly mocked for it.

Beautiful Invicta Watches For Women

Invicta watches ?known for combining fine Swiss timekeeping with cutting-edge, signature styling for men ?also offer some striking models for women. Naturally smaller than the men抯 models, Invicta watches for women range from understated watches with simple leather bands to standout diver抯 watches that come in a variety of colors. The Invicta Watch Group was founded in 1873 by the Picard family of Switzerland. The watch company was held within the Picard family for almost 120 years before it was sold in 1991 to a Florida company. Today, renato watches, Invicta is led by Chief Executive Officer Eyal Lalo, a third-generation watchmaker. Now Invicta manufactures watches all over the world, using the same fine watch-making techniques introduced by the Picards more than a century ago. One of the elegantly simple models offered by Invicta is the Women抯 Lupah Swiss quartz watch with its mother-of-pearl dial. Priced at under $80, this model comes in a choice of five leather stingray straps ?green, light blue, mustard, pink and red. The Lupah line of watches feature a silver-tone,womens watch, stainless steel rounded rectangular case, the bezel of which has a fine satin finish. The white mother-of-pearl dial has raised markers at each hour position. There is a date window at the 6:00 position. Lupah watches are water resistant to 165 feet. Each comes with a one-year limited warranty that can be extended to five years. As a variation on the Lupah theme, consider the Swiss quartz crocodile strap watch. For just over $75, you could choose to sport a copperhead snake strap in fashionable hot pink, light pink, lime green or orange. If you抮e looking for a sporty style in a really bright color, consider the Women抯 Lupah quartz day and date watch with its Corian strap. Beautiful Bulova Watches That Stands The The Test Of Time

The historical past and success of Bulova Watches is intently intertwined with the history of the United States in the twentieth century. Just as America was based by immigrants from foreign shores, the Bulova Watch company was started by Joseph Bulova, a young Bohemian immigrant in 1875 in New York City. Making beautiful pocket watches and lovely clocks, younger Joseph brought with him previous-world craftsmanship and shaped it with new-world innovation. Over the course of the subsequent one hundred thirty years, the Bulova Model developed into one of the world's main developers of timekeeping instruments. These included delicate boudoir clocks and easy pocket watches to diamond encrusted watch pins for women. In 1919,dive watch, when the US entered World War I, the watch company began making easy but sturdy wristwatches for our soldiers. Until this time, wristwatches were for the elite. In 1920, the company constructed an observatory atop a skyscraper in the middle of New York City. This is the primary observatory to be built on top of a skyscraper. It's managed by a mathematician, whose readings are instantaneously recorded electronically on a chronograph, guiding the watchmakers in the Setting and Timing unit. This was an necessary feat because it demonstrated Bulova's dedication to accuracy and exacting measurements for his or her timekeeping pieces. In 1923 the corporate introduced and perfected a revolutionary concept in the industry: complete standardization of parts. From then on, every Bulova watch was made with such precision (standardized to 10 thousandth of an inch) that it's interchangeable with the identical half in other Bulova watches. It is a revolution in the watch servicing industry. Different firsts embrace the introduction of the primary clock radio in 1928. In 1929 they re-engineered how car clocks have been made and installed. In 1924, Bulova was the primary watch firm to introduce a line of women's watches, including diamond-encrusted styles. By now, extra People were carrying Bulova watches than any other watch brand. In 1926,relic watches, Arde Bulova, the son of the founder and now President of the company, supplied a prize to the first pilot to fly a transatlantic flight solo. The Benefits of Quartz Cuckoo Clocks_2

Unlike windup cuckoo clocks, which require rewinding every one, two or eight days before, quartz cuckoo clocks use a more modern timing mechanism, drawing power from batteries and running continuously... Battery cuckoo clocks run for approximately one year on a new set of batteries give or take a little, depending on the type of battery used and the amount of animated movement built into the clock.  Obviously, vintage watches, moving one small bird in and out of it抯 little house once an hour is going to take a lot less battery power than moving a small group of animated characters in a moving scene out of their housing, around to the front of the clock, citizen watch, sounding the cuckoo noise, playing the accompanying music, and moving them all back inside again as often as every half hour, as is the case with some ornate clocks. All battery-operated clocks are fitted with a manual volume control for the sounds and a shut off switch to conserve battery power.  On many battery operated clocks, a photo cell acts as a shut-off switch,  turning off the sounds - and music if any -  automatically each night.  Another major difference in these battery operated quartz cuckoo clocks is that instead of merely mimicking the sound of the cuckoo bird, they play an actual recording of a real cuckoo bird with the possible addition of other woodsy or jungle sounds, such as running water, or anything else the creator of the piece may desire. At the appropriate times, the doors open, the bird emerges from his house, any other animated characters swing into action, the cuckoo issues its call, flaps it抯 wings, automatic watch, the music is played and then the whole thing shuts off and the characters return to their resting places awaiting their next call to action.  Battery powered cuckoo clocks allow for far more activity than the old fashioned mechanical cuckoo clocks were capable of, and whether you prefer the simplicity of the earlier works to the battery powered ones remains a matter of personal choice Article Tags: Quartz Cuckoo Clocks, Quartz Cuckoo, Cuckoo Clocks

That Damn Ticking Clock_2

Tick, tick, tick...there goes that biological clock again! What's a poor girl to do when she can't meet the man that just will love her for her? Doc gives a woman a clock-check.
Dr. Dennis,
So I am about to turn 33. I抦 financially stable and have a great career. But when it comes to dating I don't feel like I抳e found the "1" so I am starting to think about having a baby on my own... scary. I know it's not the ideal idea. Trust me, I imagined having met Mr. Amazing and fell in love. But, as I got more self sufficient I got more picky. I'd like someone who can love me for me. I didn't need to put up with guys treating me badly ...I want a child though and my clock is ticking... Is that so bad? So I went to your site to see what it's like to date once you have a child and was blown away!! You've described women with children (with the first word as DON'T) who are looking for a father, health insurance, gold diggers... wow.
There's a whole generation out there that loves and wants children without any strings attached. I am disappointed with your biased opinion of women. I'm sure that type does exist... but the last thing I'll need is someone paying my bills...as many women in their 30s are starting to face this dilemma of do you go ahead and have a child if it抯 something you really truly want??... Please be more aware of their choices and why they are making them. God forbid they are actually looking for a great partner and companionship. Not someone who can drive car-pool. Remember girl, some of us can afford to have children on our own and are happy with their decision.

Hello!
Thanks for your comments.?BR />I'm not entirely sure where to start with you, so I'll just dive right in:?BR />First of all, that old chestnut "I want someone that can love ME for ME" translates to: "I don't want to have to bring anything to my relationship. I don't want to have to grow or change or BE anything in particular for my partner. I just want to get - to take - without any strings attached. Then, when things don't work out exactly as I want them too or if I get angry or upset by anything, I can just up and leave. After all, I TOLD the guy that I just wanted someone to love ME for ME!"?BR />Really, what the hell? If you seriously think this is what you want, NO WONDER you can't find a good man! You're in it entirely for you (more proof to follow) and have nothing to offer any man! So what - you can feed and clothe yourself. Big fucking deal! You're only going to attract men that are in it for themselves too. It almost seems like the perfect match!?BR />Regarding children: here are just some of the problems:?BR />First, it's just more selfishness on your part. Consider this: children don't ask to be born, it's based on some adult (sometimes even TWO!) that selfishly want a carbon-copy of themselves. They imagine all the attention they'll get walking around with that little living doll that they get to dress up and will re-make them into the perfect image of humanity: themselves.?BR />The problem with this is that children will only put up with this for a year or so until they begin to realize that they aren't little play-things. They have a sense of self and even believe they have "rights". Then the "terrible two's and three's and four's" kick in and it's only downhill from there! By six or seven, they'll be expecting cell phones and trips to Europe!?BR />Next, you just want to have kids because you want them, not because it's the best thing for the kid at all! Study after study continues to show that children raised in a single-parent household are far, FAR more likely to have all sorts of social adaptation issues later on in life. They are far more likely to drop out of school, experiment with drugs, commit crimes, and even suicide. If it's a girl, she's far more likely to become a pregnant teenager. Of course, you're a superwoman, and YOU'D never have a child like that, right? Mom's own selfish example will NEVER be seen by the kid!?BR />Oh wait, there's more!?BR />Since you have such a great job, you can't afford to leave it and thus, you'll be back working within 6 months of having your kid. That means that while mommy's at work, someone ELSE will be raising the kid. I bet his first words will sound a lot like "mamma" in Spanish! Of course, skagen watches, you're not going to be getting any sleep for the first 3 years and you'll be among the walking dead at work, so your productivity will drop to zero, vintage watches, and your co-workers will have to pick up the slack for you. I'm sure they won't mind however, because you're a MOMMY! You'll probably experience added stress because your job will be in jeopardy and you may even need to cut back your hours.?BR />Of course your social life will also drop to nothing because you need to be home taking care of the kid! What's that I hear? You're not going to stop partying? Well great for you! Bad for your kid however. Also, men are far less likely to date single mothers, so that drops your pool of potential fathers for your spawn even further! You'll be so overwhelmed with motherhood that you'll just have to settle for any guy that finally comes along and doesn't bolt because of your being a mom! Some "choice"!?BR />Yes, there IS a whole generation that wants kids without any strings attached. That's exactly the problem! With kids come strings - you can't avoid it. So when the reality kicks in and you begin to realize just how selfish that is, you begin to hide it and look to idols to prove you were right all along. Look at Jaime Lynn Spears as an example. She's doing it right (just like her mother before her) and you KNOW how great the Spears girls turned out, right? Of course, that's only one example in a sea of examples!?BR />Being able to afford having children doesn't make you a "mother" any more than having a function reproductive system does. That's just ridiculous!?BR />Now, let's consider the alternative, shall we??BR />What if instead, you took the time and made the effort to work on yourself so that you were a better partner for the "1" so that when he comes along, he sees this and even sees his own unborn children in your eyes. Then, you two horn-dogs get together and have an incredible romance that lasts the ages, get married and have that same child. Now, not only does she have a father figure (and the respect of all the other fatherless children at school), but she has a mommy that is focused and concentrated on her well-being. Then, she grows up with a family full of love and support only to turn around and give that back to her own children because her parents weren't selfish, self-centered assholes??BR />Dare I dream??BR />Best regards...------------------------------------------------------------------Have a love, dating, automatic watch, relationship, sex or man/woman question?
