Jacob of is one of the more unique and colorful characters in the world of watches. A past filled with controversy, success, and spectacle has made his exploits some of the most closely watched in the luxury industry. Aiming for an honest rebound, 2013 seems ripe for some fascinating new innovations and products on the timepiece side of the luxury brand. This new watch is called the “Epic SF24,” and it is a 24 time zone travel timer that uses a flip slide style display like vintage alarm clocks.

A perpetual maverick, running watch, Jacob & Co. has faithfully adhered to developing timepieces that push the limits of what one can produce in wrist watch form. Famously expensive, and famously polarizing, some of the brand’s timepieces have been more successful than others, but few lack serious horological ambitions.

Speaking for timepiece lovers, betsey johnson watch, it is difficult to ignore the products that are offered by the luxury watch maker. In my opinion, while the brand is known for their bejeweled diamond-studded products, Jacob & Co.’s best timepieces are totally devoid of precious stones. While versions with diamonds will likely be available, tudor watches, the core EPIC SF24 watch doesn’t need bling to dress it up.

It takes a certain degree of independent thought (and wealth) to even consider wearing a timepiece like this. The unorthodox upside down horseshoe-style case is 45mm wide, and based around the flip clock module at the top of the dial. This is the indicator for the second time zone. To the left is the name of the reference city and to the right is the hour portion of the time. The minutes are read using the analog hand which is part of the more traditional time display below. A pusher to the left of the world timer module allows you to cycle between cities.

The movable city name display is also retro in its presentation of a world time watch. It recalls a pre-electronic digital age oftravelinglooking like something out of a train station or airport circa 1970 and before. The movement is 100 % mechanical being co-developed by Swiss watch movement maker Concepto (their Caliber 2220 movement) and Swiss Studio7h38, that produced the exclusive GMT-SF24 module for the world time complication. The movement further features automatic winding, as well as a 40 hour power reserve.

In the high-end world of timepieces of this caliber, only mechanical will do. You’ll never see anything electronic in a watch like this from . The customers who purchase these types of watches are dedicated collectors and only traditional mechanical mechanisms are of interest the majority of the time.

Sitting on the wrist, the Jacob & Co. Epic SF24 watch will be available in 18k rose or white gold, as well as a sportier model in a titanium case. While the design may very well prove to be an acquired taste, the mechanism and functions are refreshingly straightforward. An horological novice could pick this up and understand how to use it right away. That’s something that is hard to do and still offer a truly novel timepiece invention.

No word on specific pricing yet, but it would surprise me to see the Jacob & Co. EPIC SF24 watch priced at anything under $100,000. The timepiece will debut soon, and coincides with a totally revamped leadership and operational environment at the brand that will need this and more to prove to the luxury community the Jacob & Co. has still got it.
